How do you explain the rate at which chronic disease is increasing in America and how does naturopathic medicine address its treatment and prevention?
Chronic disease is out of control in our country. Seventy eight percent of all healthcare dollars spent in the U.S. goes to chronic disease management. This is concerning to allopathic medicine. As affirmed in an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2004 (JAMA, Vol. 292 No. 9, September 1, 2004), allopathic medicine is “ill prepared to handle this situation.”
Naturopathic medicine explores the whole person and potential reasons that illnesses are expressed in a person. Our main focus in the treatment of chronic illness such as obesity, hypertension, diabetes, cancer, depression, autoimmune diseases, etc., is a Therapeutic Lifestyle Change (TLC). A TLC includes optimizing nutrition, minimizing toxic exposures, managing stress, enhancing sleep and exercise, as well as supporting areas of decline that occur with the natural aging process.
