I am pregnant and I was wondering what effects (if any) would Stevia have on me or my baby? I just recently discovered Stevia at Trader Joe’s up until then I had never heard of it. I wanted to try it but I was afraid. I know that artificial sweeteners are a no no during pregnancy, so what about stevia? I miss my dark chocolate and coffee. What other supplements, foods or diet advice would you recommend for pregnancy?
Stevia is safe in pregnancy. No worries there. During pregnancy if you have cravings, the dark chocolate is best and keep it to a bite here and there when you need it. Do not, however use the sugar alcohols like I spoke about on TV, use the real thing instead. There are no studies on the sugar-alcohols on pregnancy and although I believe it would be safe, I can’t recommend it until we know for certain. Pregnancy is such a sacred time – everything, as it exists in nature. In general, less is more during pregnancy when it comes to supplements. Typically, I recommend three things – a prenatal vitamin, digestive enzymes and fish oil supplementation. You need the nutrients from the vitamin. Your gut will experience less heartburn and constipation with the aid of a gentle plant based enzyme, and the fish oil is essential for softening your uterus for a beautiful delivery as well as for the baby’s brain development. If you can’t tolerate the oil early on (as it may cause gastrointestinal upset), definitely bring it on board in the last trimester. Healthy, happy baby to you!
