I have chronic back pain due to arthritis, bulging discs, - you name it I have it. I go for shots and that helps. I suffer with the pain in my hip and down my legs (both) and wonder if there are any exercises that really would help?
Chronic pain is systemic inflammation. Please refer to my article on inflammation as a starting point. Also, I’d like to refer you to a book called Healing Back Pain by Dr. Sarno. He used to have a PT office and has switched over to educating people about movement and the emotional component of pain as well. Excellent book. Depending on your condition, age and desire, I prefer yoga as an exercise program because as a science it focuses on not only aligning the spine and nervous system and to provide strength to the muscles, it is also a big gift at reintegrating the body-mind-spirit in a harmonious way. When we suffer from pain, we end up having negative self talk . . . “I hurt all over…I need to take something to make this go away. . . when will this cycle stop,” etc. Shifting our thoughts away from resistance and towards acceptance is the first step on the emotional plain to have the body cooperate with our desires. This is one of the most difficult aspects, but essential nonetheless. Since food is our first medicine, I always recommend food allergy testing as removing a silent inflammatory substance from the body effects the entire inflammatory cascade. I know this gives you many things to think about. Remember that our symptoms are just the outcome of an imbalance. For each of us that imbalance may lie more heavily in the physical body (food), the emotional body (love vs. fear) or the spiritual body (gratitude living). Bless your journey!
