Why did you choose naturopathic medicine as your career path?
After practicing as a nurse for ten years, I developed a great desire to understand more of the disease process, or manifestation of imbalance, rather than the actual disease itself. People have always been more interesting to me than their disease. In fact, five people coming to see me for diabetes may have five different treatment plans because the reason for each expression will vary based on the person, their exposures, their lifestyles, their stresses, etc.
As a naturopathic physician, I have the privilege to treat the person who happens to have the diagnosis rather than treating the diagnosis itself. A diagnosis is an endpoint. The interesting part for me is how that endpoint occurred. It is very enriching and satisfying for me personally to influence health more so than sickness.
