Preparing For a Healthy School Year
We all want our children to be happy. We also want our children to be healthy, and as school starts up again, the exposures are greater (more number of children) and in tighter spaces (classrooms). There are many very simple things you can do to help your child’s and your immune system as the rhythm of life changes.
- Get plenty of sleep
- Melatonin is natural to the body, safe and effective for helping the body to relax and also serves as an excellent antioxidant for the body. We have chewable tablets that kids love; 1.5 mg per tablet. All ages can benefit. I started giving one tablet crushed into a powder to my baby at 6 months of age. One reason was that since I had him later in life, I was already deficient and it showed in both of our sleep patterns. To this day, we both take a healthy dose and we both sleep like babies.
- If your child has nightmares, especially since times are transitional right now, you might consider inositol. It is a B vitamin that helps the brain to relax. It comes in a powder that tastes delicious and is given right before bed. Start with ½ tsp in kids 50 pounds and under and 1 tsp for kids 50 pounds and over. There is no toxicity associated with giving too much. How do I know? One of my children ate the whole jar one night and had not one ramification. Typically the jar will last us a month between two children.
- Stay hydrated
- Don’t be fooled for the aluminum water bottles.
- Make sure the water bottle you use is made of stainless steel.
- If you are using disposable water bottles, never freeze them as you liberate plastizers that are in the soft plastics.
- We should all drink half of our body’s weight in water per day. If you are active and sweating a lot, drink more and get enough minerals. Colloidal minerals to water daily is a great way to get water into the cells and not have the fluid run right through you.
- Support overall cellular health and immune system
- Fish oil – try the new fish chewables that kids love called Nordic Omega-3 Fishies. Two with breakfast and two after school help brain function in addition to strengthening immune system. For the athletic children, it helps protect their joints as well.
- Basic vitamin – try the new chewable vitamins, Nordic Berrries. Take some with breakfast and again after school to augment a healthy diet and to provide nutrients necessary for overall health and wellbeing.
- If your child suffers many colds, allergies or flus, consider daily dosing of probiotics/acidophilus. This is also very important if your child has been on an antibiotic. It takes 18 months to replace the good bacteria in our digestive tract after just one round of antibiotics. It should be considered an ongoing support throughout our lifetime. Remember that 80% of our immune system parallels our digestive tract. When broken down, we suffer more symptoms on all levels.
- Offer your child 1000IU Vitamin D a day and if you suspect a compromised immune system, consider testing your child’s level to ascertain he/she is getting enough. We have a liquid form that is 1000IU per drop and tiny capsules that are 5000IU each. My 12-year old takes a 5000 IU daily since we know that his levels are low. He is in the sun all the time and not with sunscreen and still deficient.
These simple suggestions can make the world of difference for your kids overall health on all levels…and they have passed the taste test!
